20 Years Mr Music in Bonn

There was a time, I’m told. when Bonn was a haven for record shops.  Up until recently there was still ‘Kaufhof’ for the bestsellers, ‘Gilde’ for the Classics, and there was a little store opposite Bonn Central Station for the best of the rest.  Now there is only one – and it’s the little store with the Big heart  that still stands.  Saturdays Harmonie concert by Julian Sas was a chance to celebrate not just good music, but also 20 Years of ‘Mr Music’ on Maximilian Strasse.  Proprietor Bernd Gelhausen has been devoted to the music business all his life – working behind a shop counter before going into management and record production.  He still gets involved in promotion, most recently with Swedish  Hard Rockers Bonafide, LA Blues Rockers Little Caesar and of course Dutchman Julian Sas.  Look for an in depth interview with Mr Gelhausen around the shops 25 th Anniversary -in five years time.  A big part of that interview happening will be down to you, dear reader and music lover .  Here’s the shop where you can still hear the satisfying ‘clack’ of looking through a rack of discs: Mr Music Bonn

The Purple ones are currently celebrating the 40 Anniversary of their classic release ‘Machinehead’ a record that brought the World one of Rock Music’s defining moments: ‘Highway Star’ and probably it’s most famous riff ‘Smoke on the Water’.

Tickets go onsale 17 November and with a concert start time of 3 pm more top Rock is sure to be added.

Bear in mind also that this concert offers a limited number of ‘Front of Stage’ and ‘Seated’ tickets so book early!

From Bamako to Bonn

It’s a funny old World where Blues gets attributed so readily to Mega-money musicians like Eric Clapton and The Stones and ‘authenticity’ means Joe Bonamassa and Walter Trout. The Blues sprang in reality from many thousands of Black People out of a spiritual need, and whilst  there are few Artists around today who fill that description,  two of the best were In Bonn at the Harmonie on Sunday: Eric Bibb and Habib Koité:

Jessy Martens – Brand New Blues

Three time winner in the 2012 German Blues Awards and a Finalist in this years ‘German Blues Challenge’, the star of Jessy Martens would seem to be on the rise. But how good is a German Blues Award winner? On the evidence of her appearance at the Harmonie on Thursday, very good indeed. If you’re reading this in mainland Europe get to a concert, and if you’re in Britain, America or Australia do yourself a favour and get a copy of the new CD. This girl has a big future!
