Forty Years of Sunny Skies – Rope Schmitz Interview

In 2010 Bonn’s local newspaper ‘Express’ asked its readers to vote for their favourite Bonn Musician.  No surprise in first place – Beethoven.  Robert Schumann also scored highly of course.  In a very respectable 8th place though, ahead even of Schumann’s wife Clara, came local Pop coverband Sunny Skies.

Ahead of their 40th Anniversary Harmonie concert on 21 April,  3SONGSBONN asked founder member of the band Rope Schmitz how Sunny Skies came into existence, and how he explained their continued popularity.

For those of you who missed out, here is a consolation prize – the brand new official video to Cherry’s latest release:

Clare Free – Dust & Bones

Ever since Clare Free’s 2010 CD  ‘Be Who You Are’ I’ve been looking forward to a new one from the girl from Oxfordshire.  Her musical upbringing saw Clare mingle with some excellent British Blues musicians including popular band ‘The Spikedrivers’ and Matt Schofield, but I found the disc a bit too clinical sounding, the vocals a bit too ‘folky’ (I like folk but it didn’t quite fit the themes or the music on the disc).   On her second official release ‘Dust & Bones’ though, Clare ticks a lot of boxes that say ‘This is not just ‘another’ woman playing the blues who knows her way around a fretboard –  this is a unique voice waiting to be discovered’.

The Brew – Catching new fans on the Web

The BrewIt’s always worth checking which bands are pencilled in for The Crossroads Festival from WDR Televisions ‘Rockpalast’.  The show that caught my eye this year was Saturdays bill which coupled Australian Rockers Dirty York with the opportunity to check on   Grimsby’s finest Blues Rockers The Brew.   Not surprisingly the music was every bit as hot as the weather on Saturday evening.

James Murdoch at The Fiddlers

Thanks in no small part to the Local Folk Club, Bonn is starting to attract increasing  interest from  visiting Fok Musicians worldwide.  An example of the excellent quality of music starting to come this way is Canadian James Murdoch.  Seeking to combine a holiday with a few gigs, James contacted Bonn Folk Club.   In the absence of  a Folk Club meet though The Fiddlers Irish Pub snapped him up for a show.   Armed with a borrowed guitar, some excellent self-penned songs, and a  striking partner in the shape of girlfriend Amber Bissonnette on mandolin, James Murdoch set about changing diners and football fans into music fans.
