Kunst!Rasen Rocknacht with Deep Purple
It’s been a busy (expensive) week for fans of Classic Rock with Neil Young bringing in 13000+ in Cologne, Carlos Santana making a rare appearance in Bonn, and in between Deep Purple at Kunst!Rasen… Even for the wealthy Rockfan over fifty it’s still physically hard on tired legs. I made my stand (pardon the pun) at Kunst!Rasens ‘Classic Rock Nacht’ where I got four bands for the price of one including current top Rockers Gov’t Mule and the legendary Deep Purple.
Katie Melua – The search is Over
It’s ten years now since Katie Melua was catapulted to success on the strength of her first album, full of romantic tales, ‘Call off the Search’. Since then, Melua has found the love in her life – Superbike Racer James Toseland, but if her own personal search for love has now been called off you wouldn’t know it in the imploring tones of her magical voice at Kunst!Rasen. Love though is a heavy road as she pointed out before embarking on a rather less romantic ‘love Song’ called ‘I’d Love to Kill You’. A magical night for good songs well sung was guaranteed.
BAP at home on the Rhine
Sorry Zaz, but on Wednesday you won’t be the first musician on the Kunst!rasen stage to have played at the Rheinau before. Wolfgang Niedecken’s BAP played at the 1979 Bundesgartenschau here as one of the band’s first ‘outings’ away from ‘Kölle” (Cologne) and thirty four years later they were back on the banks of Father Rhine in Bonn.
Kunstrasen Brings The Summer
Drummer Christian Blüm very wisely took a bicycle ride to the opening gig of Kunstrasen 2013. Following fears that the open air field would actually become an open air lake we had a glorious day of sunshine, and there was only one dinghy sailing across the Rheinaue Field. It contained Peter, one half of the brothers that made up this seasons openers Brings, and the ‘sea’ was one of hands. Thousands of them in fact as The KunstRasen Open Air Season 2013 got underway.

Congratulations to last years final live act at Kunst!Rasen – Caro Emerald entered this weeks UK Pop Chart at number 1 with ‘The Shocking Miss Emerald’ – bettering even Hugh Laurie’s new effort ‘Didn’t It Rain’. The good Doctor ‘only’ managed to chart in third place.

“It’s not our private lawn. There is an Arts scene in Bonn and we are a part of it.” With that sentence Co-Promoter Martin Nötzel described perfectly the wide-ranging and ambitious plans for Bonn’s Open Air Venue Kunst!Rasen in the coming Season at this weeks’ Press Conference. If there isn’t something for everyone it will clearly not be for want of trying. Top Rock musicians have almost become expected, but Open Air Opera, Picnics, Comedy, Classics, Cinema… The biggest headache might just be fitting it all into a ‘mere’ four months – early June to late September. From BAP to Beethoven and everything in between.
Kunst!Rasen Update
New additions to the Open Air concert Season at Bonn’s Kunst!Rasen include a return appearance from Zaz (03.07), a first appearance by Beth Hart after her popular Crossroads show in 2011 at the Harmonie (23.07), and Heino – who’s new CD ‘Mit freundlichen Grüssen’, a selection of Rock cover versions, has put the normally more sedately paced German legend firmly back in the public eye (18.08).
Add to this BAP, Brings, Katie Melua, Santana, a Rock Night with Deep Purple and Gov’t Mule not to mention Crosby, Stills & Nash – there is a lot to look forward to along with the return of Summer to Bonn.
