Layla Zoe – Nowhere Left To Go (Layla Zoe Music)

Layla Zoe certainly didn’t make it easy for herself. 2018’s superb double-disc ‘Gemini’ seemed to say everything that could be said and in the best way possible. It was electric, it was Blues, Funk, Gospel and Rock. It was the sum of all the releases before it. The subsequent ‘Retrospective Tour’ and disc suggested a watershed moment had been reached. Did it also leave the self-proclaimed firegirl literally with ‘Nowhere Left To Go’? – is this perhaps the aptest album title ever penned? Well, no, as it thankfully turns out. Whilst NLTG doesn’t re-invent the wheel as far as Layla’s music is concerned it is, thanks to plenty of new faces behind the songs, still a fresh as well as a strong statement from the heart. It also still showcases the lady’s amazing voice with that trademark emotional intensity that is the secret of Layla Zoe’s success.

Allman Betts Band to Support Deep Purple at Kunstrasen next year

In the hope that there is a tunnel. and we will see the light at the end of it soon…  On 1 July next year Deep Purple will be joined by some very special guests at Kunstrasen.

The Allman Betts Band features Devon,  the son of Allman Brothers frontman Greg Allman (already a visitor to Bonn Harmonie in the past),  paired up with Duane Betts, son of original Allman’s guitarist Dickey Betts.  Onboard too is Berry Duane Oakley, son of the Allman Brothers Band’s founding late bassist, Berry Oakley.  The band is still pretty fresh out of the blocks  but word is that they are chips off of their respective musical family blocks.  Judge for yourself from this video.

Open Piano for Refugees

Live music in Bonn is always welcome – especially so when it is towards a good cause.  Konstantin Kopenhagen warmed up the  ‘Open Piano for Refugees’ keyboard in Münsterplatz this afternoon.

Anyone is free to sit down and play the piano (after disinfecting their hands first of course – Covid rules apply as always) All donations go towards the DoReMi social music institute in Vienna which serves to promote the inclusion of refugees or socially disadvantaged people regardless of nationality.

Lite & Airy – Bonn Folk Club Open Air

It might look smoothly asphalted to the eye, but the road to Dotty’s Sports Bar for Folk Club Bonn‘s September meet was a rough one indeed.  A long one too, as John Harrison will tell you.  Involving numerous meetings with the owner and correspondence between Folk Club and the powers that be in Bonn.  In the end, though it was a worthwhile journey.  The Hockey pitch at Dotty’s proving to be an excellent open-air venue, and the weather being much kinder than anyone had a right to expect in the early days of Autumn.  Perhaps God is a folk music fan?  Or perhaps he just realised that good music was good for the souls of his creations in this Pandemic riddled World we are all enduring.

Over The Border Date in 2020

This year’s planned ‘Over The Border’ Festival has sadly had to be moved to 2021. The good news just out though is that the organizers of the popular music diversity festival have now been able to still schedule one event in 2020.  Local ambassadors are already a tradition at the Festival. The formation around Fanta4 percussionist Roland Peil, who has been part of the festival since its inception, will be the evening’s main guests, but there will be lots of top-class additional guests to enjoy too.  In order to comply with hygiene considerations in view of Corona Virus the concert will now take place at Bonn Brückenforum on 19 September at 8pm, seating and tables will allow the correct distancing of attendees.  Note too that everyone who has already purchased tickets (the concert was originally scheduled to kick off the Festival in March 2020) should contact Manuel Bahna promoter at m.banha@wunsch.com for registration and table reservations.

Live music on Court 1 with Room Service

OpernRasenLIGHT in Bonn

Along with the recent good news that street music permits are again available comes the welcome news of a new ‘mini’ open-air festival in Bonn centre this Summer.   The cultural office (Kulturamt) has organized a varied music program from August through September 2020 titled OpernRasenLIGHT in compliance with the applicable hygiene measures to enliven the open land in front of the Bonn Opera  House.  Jazz, world music and acoustic folk are on offer. The musical will be playing from 5 to 7 p.m. with two sets of 30 minutes each.

What happens when, despite the old saying, the show really can’t go on?  Here is a short interview with two men behind the beleaguered live music scene in Germany.  Manni Glamowski would have been behind the scenes at this year’s Rock Hard Festival (hosting Accept and Blue Oyster Cult) and Ernst Ludwig Hartz would have been introducing the likes of Robbie Williams, Kraftwerk and Lionel Richie, Deep Purple at the Kunstrasen and Hofgarten right here in Bonn.  Rockpalast asked them both for their thoughts, and fears, over the live music scene in Covid19 times.
