British Blues AwardsReaders who know their UK Blues can
VOTE HERE for favourite musicians in this years British Blues Awards.

Many of this years nominees have appeared in the Bonn/Cologne area, so will be familiar to fans here – (Walter Trout, Oli Brown, Joanne Shaw Taylor, Will Wilde, Roger Inniss, Wayne Procter).   There is also an International Artist Award where once again  Joe Bonamassa is amongst the choices  (a strange omission is Seasick Steve).

Other nominees include Cherry Lee Mewis and Clare Free, two talented ladies who have appeared on this site even though they have yet to visit the area.  Hopefully that will change!

The Awards will be presented on 9 Sept at the Newark Castle Blues Festival

On the Jazz Tube

Enroute to the Rheinaue for a Jazz evening I squeezed in time to check out the Jazz Tube.

When I arrived, the Tram Station Museumsmeile/Heussallee was hosting a young lady named Maya Fadeeva and her backing duo – collectively the Maya Trio.  Tim Haenelt on guitar kept it simple but excellently effective, with a solid rhythm underpinning  courtesy of Dutchman Roy Louis.  Star of the show was of course Maya herself.  Hailing from St Petersburg before moving to Bonn via time in New York and at the Music Conservatory in Maastricht, this young lady certainly has a lot of star quality.  She cites Diana Krall as an influence, and maybe it was her hairstyle, but I kept seeing and hearing Cleo Lane – which is itself no bad thing.  Her version of Mose Allison’s ‘Nothings gonna be Alright’ seemed well taylored to her young vibrant style, and ‘Georgia On My Mind’ is the sort of classic that can sound dated in the wrong hands – here though again it had an edge of youth keeping it sounding fresh.

Jazz im Biergarten

As always the RheinAue Restaurant in the Rheingarten is offering an excellent Season of Free Jazz Concerts throughout the Summer in Bonn.

The Season started on 11 May and will carry on through until the end of August.  As always, entry is free, but please remember that events of this kind depend on takings at the bars and restaurants onsite – so if you want to enjoy concerts again next year please help to support the local gastronomy rather than taking your own food and drinks.  You will be helping to keep music live and alive in Bonn!

The Pogues – James Fearnley Interview

When I rang Shane up to tell him that I was finally writing a book about us and that I would probably be on the unstinting side, he said: ‘I don’t give a f**k about that.

It would have been hard to believe at the time, but during their hard living, hard touring, hard drinking days someone within legendary Irish Band The Pogues was soberly making notes.  The result is ‘Here Comes Everybody’ a book intriguingly described by it’s Author, the Bands Accordion Player James Fearnley, as ‘Creative Non-fiction’.  Fearnley’s book begins on 30 June 1980 in London when he arrived, Telecaster in hand, to audition for MacGowan’s band ‘The Nips’ and abruptly ends in Yokohama (30 August 1991) when MacGowan is called to a Band meeting and sacked.  As you can well imagine, there is an intriguing story to be told in between.

In an exclusive interview, 3SongsBonn asked Fearnley for his thoughts on the New Book, on the Old Band and on their upcoming Concert in Cologne this August.  His answers are honest and with a touch of humour that must have been a life-saver during the tempestuous early years of Pogue Mahone and the roller-coaster ride to success in a mini-van existence that Fearnley likens to the atmosphere of Germany’s epic Naval drama ‘Das Boot’.

Introducing Jack Savoretti

If you caught Madison Violet at the Harmonie recently then you will have been lucky enough to also catch Jack Savoretti supporting them.

Fresh on the heels of a tour of UK Coffee Shops (adding a new meaning to the old Rock n Roll saying ‘No Sleep ’til Hammersmith’) Jack has also made a prestigious appearance on Terry Wogan’s Radio Show.  His songs have been used on American TV Soaps already, and I suspect his next release, due out on May 28 entitled ‘Before The Storm’ is going to be a goodie.

Here’s a short introduction, an excellent track from the album, and proof that travelling via British Rail does have it’s benefits:
