I had been looking forward to this one all year. Oli Brown and Dana Fuchs on the same bill seemed like a dream for cash conscious Blues fans. Two musicians who always give their all onstage yet seem to be different every time I see them. This time Dana had new songs and Oli a new haircut, but both had music and musicians backing them guaranteed to deliver super music at the Harmonie.

Last Stop onThe Jazz Tube 2012
It seems like only yesterday that I descended the steps of Museumsmeile Tube Station en-route to a jazz date with Rod Mason and came face to face with a small group of people huddled round a charming young lady with an even more charming voice. The voice I discovered belonged to Maya Fayeeda, and on Sunday evening I heard it again amongst the winners of this years Jazz Tube at Bonn Harmonie.
Sunny Skies & Jazz
This weekend has two special musical occasions that are well worth a visit: On Saturday (20 Oct) Local heroes Sunny Skies celebrate 40 Years as a premier Bonn Band – The Bonn Voice Choir, and Hofgarten Orchestra will be joining Rope Schmitz and co to add even more oomph to the Band’s versions of classics like Queens Bohemian Rhapsody at Bruckenforum, and if the snippet shown on WDR television recently of rehearsals is anything to go by, it should be rather special. Rope talked to 3SONGS about the Band recently – INTERVIEW HERE
Also this weekend, Maya Fadeeva is just one of the musicians appearing in the final concert of this years Jazztube competition run by SWB. The three most popular bands from Bonn’s Tubestation competition, as voted for by the commuting public, will be laying down a smooth groove for sure at the Harmonie on Sunday (21st Oct).
Full House in the Harmonie – Henrik Freischlader
Fate is strange. Barely more than a week after Jack Moore talked about how unique his fathers sound was, I found myself listening to the man who comes as close to it as anyone I’ve ever heard – Just give a listen to Henrik Freischlader playing Moore’s ‘The Messiah will come’ for proof. There’s nothing flash about Freischlader’s presentation. In this day and age of hyped music there should be a category labelled WYSIWYG for players like him -What You See Is exactly What You Get.
On Sunday night Freischlader was back at The Harmonie to present his new CD ‘House in the Woods’ to a packed house and prove why I consider him to be the best Bluesrock guitarist Germany has ever produced (put down those protesting hands Michael Schenker fans – I said BLUESrock!) A treat indeed.
Ian Parker Comes Home
Madison Violet Bloom in Bonn
Last years concert up the road at Cologne’s Kulturkirche with it’s eyecatching backdrop is imminent for release as a dvd. But although visitors to the Harmonie show had to ‘make do’ without the stained-glass windows they did have the eye-catching ladies themselves – Madison Violet – providing an ideal way to mellow out at the end of a rare hot weekend.
Just Cash – Texas Heat
How do you capture the magic of ‘A walking contradiction?’ That’s how Kris Kristofferson famously described Johnny Cash. The answer has to be – Let the music do the talking, and that’s just what ‘Texas Heat’ did in their Tribute Show to mark what would have been the great Man’s 80th year, titled Just Cash. A crowded Harmonie audience aged from 17 to 70 proved without doubt that ‘The Man’ is both as magical and as mystifying to music lovers as ever.
Dr Feelgood – Step in, Feel Good
When Dr Feelgood’s eponymous live ‚Stupidity’ album topped the British charts Canadian Jimmy Bowskill was fourteen years away from even being born. Isn’t it just possible that the young Canadian tiger could steal the thunder from Canvey Islands old lions? I went down to the Harmonie on Sunday prepared to see a showdown and to hear the guitars roar.
