Double Delight – Folk Club April

Whoever first said you don’t get anything for nothing had never attended Bonn Folk Club.  They certainly would have changed their minds if they were at Dotty’s Sportsbar/Restaurant for FCB #101.  It was a night on which we actually enjoyed multiple ‘somethings for nothing’ in the form of two excellent headline acts from the Folk World – and that’s before factoring in the additional ‘something for nothings’ that came in the form of numerous local and visiting musicians who once again dropped by to perform a song or three.  Here’s the low-down on an evening with Daria Kulesh, Lindsay May and many other contributors to another magical evening of acoustic bliss.

Kunst!Rasen for Kim Wilde

Kim Wilde of ‘Kids in America’ fame has just been announced as support on the Tears for Fears show at Bonn Kunst!Rasen on 28 June.

Wilde last appeared here at Münsterplatz in July 2018 where the picture was taken accompanying this post.  It’s somewhat odd that Wilde had a number 1 hit with her very first single in 1981 about being one of the ‘Kids in America’ when she actually hails from Chiswick in the UK.  It didn’t stop her going on to be one of the most successful female singers of the early 1980s though, and she is still making good pop music as her last release ‘Here Come The Aliens’ from 2018 proves.

Rainer Böhm Standard Trio coming to Bonn Pantheon

A treat is in store for Jazz lovers at the end of April when Rainer Böhm brings his ‘Standard Trio’ to the Pantheon.  Böhm has been one of the outstanding German jazz pianists on the jazz scene for some years now and has won numerous prizes.  He studied jazz piano and jazz arrangement at the Musikhochschule in Mannheim and Cologne and has participated in more than 50 CD recordings both as a bandleader and as a sideman. As a much sought-after pianist, the 40-year-old has made a name for himself in the international jazz scene.

For the concert in Bonn on 29 April Böhm will be joined by Christian Ramond on Upright Bass and Jonas Burgwinkel on Drums.   As internationally sought-after sidemen and multiple prize winners, both Burgwinkel and Ramond have made a name for themselves around the globe.  Ramond is a master of his trade and has performed alongside Joe Pass, Albert Mangelsdorf, P.Catherine, Kenny Wheeler, Lee Konitz, Ch.Mariano, Thomas Stanko, Bobby Shew, Jon Eardly, Dave Liebman, K.Berger, Itaru Oki.

Burgwinkel is a co-founder of the Cologne Jazz Collective ‘KLAENG’ and nominee/recipient of numerous Jazz awards such as “ECHO JAZZ 2012”, the SWR- and the WDR-Jazzpreis, and the “BEST SOLOIST AWARD” at the North Sea Jazz Festival.  He has appeared on numerous CDs;  and countless radio and television recordings document the success of his musical work. Like Ramond, Jonas Burgwinkel has performed worldwide, with jazz greats such as John Scofield, Chris Potter, Uri Caine, Dave Liebman, Lee Konitz and John Taylor.

The Standard Trio set-up is one of the favourite projects of Rainer Böhm, and his interest in interpreting the standards of the “Great American Songbook” sets a contrast to his many other musical focuses.
In this project, the trio play the compositions quite unpretentiously – and by doing so bring to the audience’s ears what normally happens behind closed doors in the rehearsal room.

Freedom and joy of improvisation of the completely unarranged original are in the foreground and promise an exciting evening full of surprising moments.

Big Daddy Wilson coming to Bonn Harmonie

You might remember him from the 2017 Blues Caravan with Sy Cranston and Vanessa Collier.  Perhaps even in 2018 when Big Daddy Wilson returned to Bonn again, this time with Baums Bluesbenders as support.

Big Daddy will be back again on 14 April bringing his new CD ‘Deep In My Soul’ with cool, authentic Soul-blues to The Harmonie.  Well recommended!

Barry Barnes, Sinnerboy, and an Irish Legend-Interview

On 20.04.2019 Barry Barnes from Manchester is the guest with his band Sinnerboy at the Hotel Klosterhof in Euskirchen.
No one evokes the sound and sheer emotion of a Rory Gallagher concert like Barnes.  He developed his enthusiasm for the guitar playing of the enigmatic Irishman at an early age.  At that time, in 1969, Rory still headed the band TASTE. After Barry had visited a show it was clear for him THIS was his music! From then on he honed his guitar playing skills and internalized the technique of Rory Gallagher.

 

After Rory’s death in 1995, Barry’s life also changed. He organized the first tribute concert in Manchester and regularly played the music of his hero in the bars and pubs of England and Ireland.
When he turned 50, Barnes decided to quit his normal job and devote himself entirely to the music of Gallagher. It’s unlikely that any other musician has played so many tribute concerts, or performed so often at what is probably the largest Gallagher tribute festival in Ballyshannon (IE). With his band Sinnerboy, Barry Barnes is the most sought after name to recreate the Gallagher sound at festivals throughout Europe. Whether Greece, Austria, Italy, Norway, Spain or Germany, the list could be endless.

 

Barnes interprets Rory’s music in his own way, close to the original but never as a cover, clearly Rory, but unmistakably Sinnerboy. What he does comes from the heart, acoustically alone, electrically with Sinnerboy, as a guest with other bands or with guests at his own show. Barry Barnes embodies, just as his great role model did, the buddy from next door with whom you can drink a pint, talk about music, down-to-earth, authentic, uniquely sympathetic.

No publicity is bad publicity? It certainly won’t do the attendance figures any harm that Dan Reed’s ‘Leaving Neverland’ film has put Jackson back in the spotlight.

Michael Jackson Jazz-style with Rüdiger Baldauf in Dottendorf

Rüdiger Baldauf’s “Jackson Trip” is an instrumental and jazzy homage to unique titles by Michael Jackson.  Bensberg born  Baldauf is one of the most versatile trumpeters in Germany so his decision to re-visit some of Michael Jackson’s hits from a new perspective should make for an interesting and enjoyable evening at the Dottendorfer Jazz night on 12 April.

Baldauf has toured with greats like Shirley Bassey, Joe Zawinul and Maceo Parker.  He has also been involved in various projects with George Duke, Ray Charles, James Brown and Barbara Streisand.  He describes ‘Jackson Trip’, his second own project after the successful jazz album Own Style, as a journey through an unforgettable, unique musical repertoire.
