R.I.P. Etta James

Français : La chanteuse américaine de blues Et...

The legendary Blues/Soul singer Etta James has died.  She was diagnosed with Leukaemia last year and had been undergoing treatment.
Her best known song ‘I Would rather go Blind’ is a favourite on the set-list of many a female singer.  Last year alone I remember hearing versions sung here in Bonn by Dana Fuchs, Layla Zoe and Jean Shy.

Dani Wilde’s Kenyan Charity Project

Dani Wilde (with Nora) in Kenya - c. Dani Wilde

On 31 January at the Harmonie you can hear great music and also contribute to a good cause.  The ‘Girls with Guitars’ are back with RUF’s  Blues Caravan and  Dani Wilde, is back after a new visit to Africa.  Here she writes about her fundraising project for children in the slums of Kenya, her work towards giving them a better education,  and how every cent can bring a smile to a young face.

Gerry McAvoy leaves Nine Below Zero

The good news that British Blues legends Nine Below Zero are making an appearance in Bonn  this month (Harmonie, 28 Jan)  is tempered by the news that long time bass player and former Rory Gallagher band member Gerry McAvoy has now left the band to pursue solo projects.  His replacement though will be original member from the bands years at A&M Records – Brian Bethell.  Bonn will be one of the first shows featuring the changed line-up which still includes top Bluesharp man Mark Feltham and frontman/guitarist Dennis Greaves together with former Rory drummer Brendan O’Neill.

Gambling Machine – Lewis Hamilton & the Boogie Brothers

Blues in Britain is really booming right now it seems, and new young stars like Oli Brown are already set to be challenged by even younger stars on the horizon.   This Lewis Hamilton is not the racing driver of that name – but he is on the fasttrack to success, having made a name for himself in his native Scotland and recently touring as support to German Bluesman Henrik Freischlader during part of the latters UK Tour.

Johnny Winter – extra show

Johnny Winters last visit to Bonn in 2007 (J.Hurd 2007)

It’s no surprise to hear that Johnny Winter’s show on 13 March is now sold out (only a surprise that it took THIS long!).

If you don’t have a ticket though don’t despair – The Harmonie has added an extra concert on 5 November from this legendary performer and tickets will be available from 9 January at all the usual ticket outlets.

Don’t hang about too long though – I’m sure these tickets will also vanish like the gold-dust they are.

‘Adieu Zum Schützenhaus’ from the Folk Club

„Angie, oh Angie, Where do we go to from here?” heartfelt words from Barry on piano to our Landlady – but with a wink?  Well, no reason to cry as Clapton might have sung -the answer had already been announced – up the road a little to ‘Haus Müllestumpe’.  There was still a little lump in the throat though, and a feeling of nostalgia for all good things that must pass as I left the ‘Gaststätte zum Schutzenhaus’ afterwards.  Above all I was thankful  that in Brigitt Annessy’s beautiful Chansons Bonn Folk Club here had a high to finish on.

Great music to come…

Aynsley Lister

Whilst we were tucking into Christmas lunch and visiting relatives The local promoters were busy lining up great music for us later in the year.  The new open-air venue has led to endless speculation – I’ve heard The Who and Zaz mentioned as forthcoming attractions.  Whilst we keep our fingers crossed on those scores there are some great evenings lined up already at the Harmonie, including a very welcome return of the legendary Louisana Red.  There’s Johnny Winter too of course, and lots more to come as a brief look at the Harmonie website reveals.
