2013 has got off to a frosty start – not just weather but also Jazz-wise where Concerts are currently rather thin on the ground. Fear not though because things ARE happening and local promoters have already cooked up some ideas for the coming Season but, as always, your support as Jazz fan is crucial for survival. Walter Schnabel provides the details…
Folk Club 33 – Singing in the New
Richard Limbert reports from Bonn Folk Clubs January Meet: With barely time to sleep off the intoxicating celebrations that saw in the New Year, Bonn Folk Club was up and running once again with its 33rd meeting . Of course, whilst you always hope for great things with your heart, your head says that a lot of people are still on vacation with their loved ones, or simply enjoying well-earned and much needed quality leisure time. What in fact happened though was that the optimistic expectations were actually not just met, but exceeded! There were both old and new faces as the venue filled up, the atmosphere was anything but lonely when things got underway as always at 7.30pm with a full house as usual.
Erja Lyytinen – Forbidden Fruit (RUF 1188)

Germany’s first real taste of ‘The Finnish Bonnie Raitt’ came with her appearance on the 2007 Blues Caravan. It brought a lot of praise, particularly for the girl’s undeniable slide guitar talents, but also a lot of expectation. In ‘Forbidden Fruit’, Erja Lyttinen’s fourth studio album for RUF, there is certainly a depth both lyrically and musically that leaps out from the earlier discs.
John Harrison on December at the Folk Club
There were 31 Folk Clubs prior to the one on Friday, and every one of them was different from the last. Meet 32 was no exception as the best one can expect is the unexpected. Certain only was that Simon Kempston would be playing as special guest – except that it was snowing hard, and if Simon managed to make it, would there be an audience to see him?
Stand the Heat – Ana Popovic
Now based in the USA she’s been as busy as ever on the Road. For those who, like me, were disappointed there was no concert in Bonn on this years Tour list – here is a taster from the upcoming CD (April 2013). Ana Popovic with ‘Can You Stand the Heat’.

Best German Rock Band 2012
Congratulations to The Jessy Martens Band on being voted Best Rock Band at the 30th German Rock & Pop Awards in Wiesbaden this week.
The award comes in a year that saw Jessy and Band also pick up three awards (for album, singer and Band) at this years German Blues Awards, Winning as a Rock Band is a positive sign that good Blues is still very much alive amongst the fans as well as the musicians of Germany.
