Temperance Movement lose their voice

Surprised and a little sad to hear that Phil Campbell has announced he will be leaving The Temperance Movement.  Bonn Rock fans will remember the band, and especially Campbell’s Paul Rodgers meets Joe Cocker vocals, from their Rockpalast appearance at the Harmonie in 2017 (see picture).

Here is an extract of Campbell’s message to the band’s fans:

“After 8 years in studios, splitter busses, trains, planes and venues all over the world, it is with a heavy heart that I announce my departure from The Temperance Movement. Its been a wild ride with many many good times and memories to cherish forever… touring Sweden in early days, selling out The Borderline in London, our first UK headline tour, Koko when Jimmy Page showed up, the Classic Rock Awards, the shows with The Stones, the first American Tour, Marrakesh, Germany, Paris… too many to mention”.

I have a feeling we haven’t heard the last of this voice, I certainly hope not…

Dad’s Phonkey opens Dottendorfer Jazznacht Season 2020

Around ten years ago The Ortszentrum Dottendorf looked set to close its doors.  The solution it seems was for the citizens themselves to look after business.  The idea of a cultural centre was put forward and now, as a new decade begins, the Bürgervereins Dottendorf/Gronau e.V. seems to be on the crest of an ever growing wave as The first Dottendorfer Jazznacht show of 2020 with Dad’s Phonkey proved on Friday.

Come On In – Thorbjørn Risager & The Black Tornado (RUF 1271)

Speaking to trumpet player and Manager Peter W. Kehl last February, the good news after the band’s super show at Bonn Harmonie was that a new Thorbjørn Risager & The Black Tornado disc was on its way.  The bad news, that it wasn’t going to hit the shops/internet until much, much later in the year.  Recorded at Viktoria studios Copenhagen between January and October, ‘Come On In’ has indeed been a long time coming – but well worth the wait.

Olivia Trummer & Nicola Angelucci in Dottendorf

Bonn Jazz fans will have an early concert to look forward to in 2020.  Olivia Trummer was the piano soloist at the recent opening concert for the 2020 BTHVN2020 Season.  Her Classical abilities are well proven then,  she is also a highly talented Jazz musician though, and her concert at the Dottendorfer Jazznacht on 31 January 2020 is sure to be a highlight of the year.

 

As a jazz pianist Olivia has performed at top venues and festivals such as the Montreux Jazz Festival, the Birdland Jazzclub in New York, the Blue Note in Tokyo and the Vancouver Jazz Festival.   Olivia Trummer will be accompanied by one of the best Jazz drummers in Italy, Nicola Angelucci for her Bonn show so definitely not one to miss!

A huge THANK YOU! to everyone who has visited this website over the last year.  I hope you’ve enjoyed seeing the photos and reading the reviews and interviews.  2020 will bring us some big concerts in Beethoven’s Anniversary year  for sure – Robbie Williams and Kraftwerk at the Hofgartenwiese, Lionel Richie and Deep Purple at Kunstrasen. Brian Ferry and John Cale are also just a stones throw away in Cologne.

My tip for the year ahead is Larkin Poe at the Live Music Hall in May.   Which show in 2020 are YOU looking forward to already?  Do you have a tip for others in the area about an undiscovered musical jewel coming Bonn/Cologne’s way?  Let us know who’s hot.

Folk Club – Simon is Back!

Well, he certainly left it late this year.  The new CD was pressed just days before this year’s December evening at Bonn Folk Club.  Regulars will know that Edinburgh singer-songwriter extraordinaire Simon Kempston made a ‘crossroads-like’ deal with John Harrison some years back – a secure guest-spot in return for a new CD. Since 2011 in fact, Simon has been a ‘regular’ in the literal sense of the word at the Club.  With copies of a new CD neatly arranged on the merchandise table, same procedure as every year, all is right with the World at Dotty’s Sportsbar.  Folk Club number 108 can begin!

New for Kunst!Rasen 2020 – Snarky Puppy

A new addition to next year’s Kunst!Rasen Open Air Season in Bonn – Brooklyn based jam band Snarky Puppy, led by bassist Michael League will play on 25 June 2020.  The Band’s wide spectrum of musical styles, encompassing elements of jazz, rock, world music, and funk has won three Grammy Awards and should ensure a great evenings music.  Beware – their  concert in E-Werk this October was quickly sold so don’t leave it too late for Kunst!Rasen – tickets are already on sale!

With Christmas just around the corner here’s a peek at what’s round the corner – and down the road as we take a look at some of the concerts coming to the area in 2020.

There’s a new open-air season at Insel Grafenwerth that includes Albert Hammond and Pink Floyd drummer Nick Mason.

Established favourites coming back to Endenich and the Harmonie stage include Layla Zoe, Mitch Ryder and King King.  John Cale and Bryan Ferry will be playing to large devoted crowds next to the Cathedral at Cologne’s Roncalli Platz for sure.

At Kunstrasen there’s Lionel Richie saying ‘Hello’, Deep Purple bringing Smoke to the Water of the Rhine – oh, and Wallsend’s most famous son Gordon Sumner aka Sting…
