Up on the roof with Still Collins

Still Collins-32Some 2700 people were up on the Bundeskunsthalle roof on Sunday afternoon.  Thankfully not all at the same time.  All the same, there was a long and snaking queue to climb the steps and see Sven Komp and his band sound pretty damn near to Phil Collins in the Genesis Phil Collins coverband Still Collins.

There is really something quintessentially Bonn about the General Anzeiger Sommergarten concerts now they are back on the Art Museum Roof.  Sunshine and happyíness on faces old and young.  Long queues for a drink or a snack to eat don’t seem to bother anyone.  It’s Sunday, and it’s Summer and it’s sunny – the three holy ‘S’ words for a happy weekend.

Still Collins are of course long established as a premier cover band.  So long in fact that they will be playing a 20th Anniversary concert in December at the Brückenforum.  Today Komp and co are taking it relatively easy, the man himself is seated for the most part and providing  a repertoire that is largely easy going Collins/Genesis material like ‘Do you remember’, ‘Another day in Paradise’ and the inevitable ‘In the air tonight’.  My particular favourite was ‘I wish it would rain down’ with a nicely accented solo by guitarist Uli Opfergelt.

For Phil Collins and Genesis fans this was the perfect way to end the week (in the absence of the originals of course) and for the rest of us it was – also the perfect way to end the week.  A quick game of mini-golf afterwards and a short snooze on the sun loungers and if it wasn’t for the fact that the refreshments tent had been long ago dismantled, I could still be up there now…
