The last time I caught Royal Southern Brotherhood live was a pretty special event. Three of my favourite guitarists were onstage – Mike Zito, Sam Fish and Devon Allmann. All of them were missing this time around, sounds like a recipe for disaster, but don’t bet aginst the Brothers delivering. This was another hot show at the Harmonie.
Henrik Freischlader Trio – Openness (Cable Car CCR 0311-47)
For a man who only started playing guitar because the neighbours complained about his drumming Henrik Freischlader has become something of a guitar legend, not just here in Germany but, through appearances with BB King and recently Tedeschi Trucks, worldwide. It’s almost a shame, because there is a whole lot more than just guitar licks to the man as his latest disc Openness reveals.
Summers here – music too…
Good to see both sunshine and live music in the City Centre of Bonn today.
I meant to do some quick shopping and head home but caught local pop/rock band Not Only Brothers doing a two hour set and my journey back got delayed somewhat by some excellent music and a cold beer.
A Taste of Blümchenknicker
Anyone who missed the Blümchenknicker 5th Anniversary show last weekend missed a stormer of an evening with Bonn’s ‘Most Mucke Truppe’ the one (or twelve!) and only Blümchenknicker.
If the stage looked crowded, then you should have seen the hall in front of it. Well, you can see it – on this short video that captures some of the music and mayhem of an unforgettable evening at Bonn Harmonie…
Fools Paradise – Bonn Folk Club April 1
It was April Fools Day and truly you would have been a Fool to miss out on the fun at Haus Müllestumpe last Friday. Put a list of people eager to play a song/set in a linen bag, tie it up tight, give it a good shake, undo the strung and see what falls out. Well, actually there’s more thought in it than that – but the beauty of Bonn Folk Club is that it seems as if things just fall into place. Friday was no exception.
Toys2 Masters – underway in 2016
Germany’s got talent, and proof that there is plenty of it in the local area is the Band contest Toys2 Masters The contest started in 1995 as a local affair but has quickly established itself in the whole NRW region as a place for young musicians to make a name and get some valuable experience and coaching.
Connie Lush Band – Renaissance (Plastic Head Distr.)

Just when I thought all the ‘best kept secrets’ in British Blues were out, this landed in the post. It’s had some stiff competition for time in my CD player recently with Tedeschi Trucks, Gary Clarke Junior and the new Layla Zoe all competing for space and time but I keep coming back to Connie Lush. Her new release Renaissance really is THAT good.
A Whole Lotta Physical Graffiti in Bonn
It can be expensive to watch coverbands. Take yesterdays appearance at the Harmonie by Physical Graffiti. Great show at the end of which it occurred to me that the only Led Zeppelin I have ever owned was Zep 3, Graffiti itself and the under-rated In through the out door – all on black vinyl and now either getting dusty on a shelf back in Portsmouth or (more likely) jettisoned from my life forever to make space for an extra cd cabinet. One evening of Andrew Elt and co and I’m thinking there are a lot of CD’s I need to buy very soon…
