With a musical fireworks display after a brilliant concert in front of over 6,000 people by Kasalla a successful concert season at KUNST!RASEN has now come to a close. the KUNST!RASEN team led by Katrin Wurm has now dismantled everything, which is no easy feat. A good 90 trucks are needed to transport everything away, with the stage and sound barrier alone requiring over 20 truckloads.

The local newspaper describes the Bröckemännchen Prize as an award for Hartnäckigkeit. What exactly is ‘Hartnäckigkeit? It’s a mixture of tenacity, stubbornness and obstinacy. I’ve known Ernst-Ludwig Hartz now for around 15 years, and all descriptions fit the man perfectly, and in the best possible sense. Hartz is Bonn’s premier concert promoter and, along with Martin Nötzel, responsible for putting Bonn on the map for major music stars at both Museumsplatz and now Kunstrasen. BAP frontman Wolfgang Niedecken was on hand to present a laudatio before the award in the Kunstrasen VIP lounge presented by Bonner Media-Club chairman Andreas Archut.

“The best band around at the moment” says Sir Elton John. “F**k them. I’ve seen better dressed roadies” says Liam Gallagher. Love or hate them, Fontaines DC are a happening band right now and it’s pretty impossible to ignore the latest ‘Rockstars’ to come out of Ireland. This year they received two nominations at the Grammy Awards, so promoter Ernst-Ludwig Hartz showed a nose for fame when he booked them for sure. Maybe he also thought a bit of controversy would liven things up a bit too? This is,after all, the man who just recieved a prize himself for his initiative and courage in Bonn’s cultural scene. Anyway, around 6,000 fans took advantage of the opportunity presented to see Ireland’s most happening music makers at Kunstrasen.

How Bonn came to be a ‘Home Concert’ forCologne’s most celebrated rockband may always remain a mystery. As the locals from Chlodwigplatz night say – “Et es wie et es”. I mean, the locals speak another language! Judging by the number of cars with K registration plates around the Kunstrasen though, BAP have brought a sizeable chunk of ‘Kölle’ with them this evening. The show was sold out long ago and 9,200 people have assembled between the catering tents the stage and the war memorial for BAP’s ‘Zeitreise’ (Time travel) concert on this fine and sunny Summer evening

The Stadtgarten Season at Alter zoll is well underway now and, if the number of picknickers assembled on the lawn is a measure, must be in line for being the most popular Season yet. It was certainly a brainwave to move the stage parallel to the grass making an extra ‘stand’ at the back. The picknickers had an interesting evening too – Lemonsun, Soelna and Crimson Bloom were a disparate group of musicial styles for sure.

Saturday was Metal Night at Stadtgarten. Did the genre matter to all those people with picnic blankets and (what seems to be a new, increasing trend) folding chairs? Friday and Saturday nights are free music nights, until the end of August. What kind of music? The best kind for many – free music! Walking gradually from the grass embankment towards the stage though there was a likewise gradual shift from blankets and wine to band t-shirts and beer. Rockers Dream Ocean and Gun Barrel were about to blow the cobwebs from the trees.
