Having written the liner notes for their new CD saying how enjoyable the disc is, how could I not go to hear Brazilian Winds live? I’m pleased to report that the music was as smooth and relaxing on stage Unter der Zeder as it is on disc. With the added elements not on disc of twin flutes and the mercurial bass guitar of Christian Kussmann, this was an ideal way to wind down after a busy Monday. Only the chilled glass of caipirinha was missing.

Here we are again in the sunshine at Bundeskunsthalle , this time with Marcus Schinkel and Daria Assmus for musical company. It’s always been hard not to think of the Sommergarten concerts here as the epitome of Summer in Bonn. Music, sunshine, a cool drink all with a wonderful view of blue skies and puffy white clouds. So why is the Season now so short? The General Anzeiger only held three concerts this year. What a shame.

No it’s not an error. This picture really was taken at this year’s Kunstrasen FolkPicknick. As the man’s tatoo suggests, the band (and in fact the man) is named Rauhbein, and at month’s end they are on the bill at the Wacken Heavy Metal Festival. An interesting choice for a ‘Folk’ bill. In actual fact they did play ‘The Irish Rover’ during their set, and they did have a fiddle player. Needless to say there was many a parent grabbing their sons and daughters before their young hearing was tested. The only other true link to Folk was that earlier act Roxanne de Bastion’s father Richard was a frequent and popular musician at Bonn Folk Club. An interesting afternoon then at Kunstrasen…

The concert by Maite Kelly & Band with guests: Timo + Pia-Sophie originally planned as an open-air concert at KUNST!RASEN on July 25, 2025 will be relocated to Brückenforum Bonn. The new venue not only offers weather-independent comfort, but also creates a warm, inviting setting for what Maite Kelly is all about at her concerts say the organizers: closeness, genuine encounters and special moments with her audience.
Management goes on to explain the venue change thus:
After the arena tour: time for new places and special encounters for Maite Kelly and the Mewes Entertainment team, it is a central concern to visit those places where she has not performed for a long time after the successful arena tour “Every place, every visitor has to be conquered anew and anyone who knows Maite knows that she never sends anyone home,” says her team: The move to Brückenforum will unable Maite to deliver a concert that is more intimate, more intense – and with sunshine in her heart.

The Bonn band Soulcake made sure of a party atmosphere for the final concert at this year’s Musik Im Park outside of the Trinkpavillion in Bad Godesberg Kurpark. Normally a twelve piece group they were down to eleven on the night – but still more than able to provide a solid evening of Soul, Funk and Rock classics including The Commodore’s ‘Brick House’, Prince’s ‘Kiss and Lionel Richie’s ‘Hello’.
A good time was had by all as usual and all for free – although a big thank you is due to all who showed their appreciation of the music and the eforts of the Burger Bad Godesberg e.V. organizing committee by putting money in the hat during the shows. Also a shout out to Helmut Both for putting everything together.
The ‘Klein aber Fein’ concert series in Bad Godesberg ‘Unter der Zeder’ got underway again this week with Marcus Schinkel and Joscho Stephan. Despite the threat of rain, there wasn’t a spare seat to be had outside amongst the Cedar trees – a testament to the high regard that both musicians are held in.

The 1977 plane crash that destroyed Southern Rock giants Lynyrd Skynyrd looked to put an end to a band that brought us possibly the greatest Arena rock ballad of all time ‘Freebird‘. Ten years later that bird proved to be a phoenix. Rising from the ashes through Johnny Van Zandt (brother of crash victim and singer Ronnie) with founder of the band, Gary Rossington. The new formation was meant to be a short tribute show – but here they are at Kunstrasen, almost forty years later, Lynyrd Skynyrd. With support acts Julian Sas and Simon McBride making this show a don’t-miss for lovers of Bluesrock and guitar riffs from finest.

“I’m so grateful to still be playing after 50 years”. Bonnie Raitt‘s words describe both her own humility and her musical longevity. This humble lady has played and sung with just about every musical legend of those last 50 years: Roy Orbison, Prince, John Lee Hooker to name just three. Her impact on women in music is also huge and she was the first lady to have a signature guitar made by Fender. Tonight though Bonnie is just glad to be on tour as she says soon after taking the Kunstrasen stage: “Thank you for taking us away from America”. They were the opening words of a magically memorable set that crowned an evening of superlative Bluesrock with guest support from Henrik Freischlader and Warren Haynes.
