Unter Der Zeder and Afrika Festival in Bad Godesberg

It may be a ‘kleines’ Theater but it’s equally ‘Kleines’ outside stage promises to be a place to enjoy for the next couple of months on Monday evenings. This year’s ‘Unter Der Zeder’ (Under the Cedar Tree’) festival runs from 11 July to 29 August next to Bonn’s Kleinen Theater in Bad Godesberg and proves once again, if proof were indeed needed, that our City has a music scene to be proud of. On Saturday 9 July the stage will welcome an African Music Festival where, judging by the musicians present at the press conference, drums will be a key feature. There will be drum and dance workshops throughout the day and music by night.

The ‘Unter Der Zeder’ Festival has quickly established itself as a place to relax and enjoy top local musicians, with the bill for 2022 proving to again a strong and varied one.

The Season kicks off on 11 July with Astatine who will be presenting songs and music from what the charismatic Rumanian calls her musical ‘Holy Trinity’ of songsmiths: Gershwin, Ellington, and Porter. I hear there will be a special guest too. No names, you will have to come along to find out.

Astatine – 11 July

Familiar names abound, with HopStopBanda’s Balkan grooves (18 July), Internationally celebrated master of Classic/Jazz/Rock Marcus Schinkel will be joined by Cologne-based Jazz/Soul singer Daria Assmus, popular local band Greencard will be playing on 15 August.

Marcus Schinkel – 22 August

Other highlights include Soul music with Soul Fabrik, Reggae with Marley’s Ghost, and Sixties United’s presentation from the heart and soul of 60’s/70’s Rock. All good things come to an end of course, but CAYU’s World music set will I’m sure make the parting less sorrowful when they close the Festival on 29 August.

Entrance for each show is 15 Euros, tickets are available via Eventbrite with music starting at 7.30 pm. The shows are open-air and subject therefore to cancellation in bad weather, so please do check beforehand if the sun does not have its hat on come Monday afternoon. Hopefully, the Cedar Tree is a fan of good music and a friend of the Green Man!
