Whats this? Englishmen fighting on the streets of Bonn? Has Brexit come to this – dividing the Nation into violence even on European streets?
Actually, Saturday saw the culmination of Oxford-Week in Bonn with a concert at Bottlerplatz that offered not just English Dance but also genuine English weather as it drizzled with icy rain for a large chunk of the day. The last time I remember seeing genuine Morris dancing was sometime in the late 1970’s outside of the Still & West Public House in Old Portsmouth. I’m still not sure what drives anyone, male or female, to Morris Dance, but I do agree they deserve some recognition for bravery in the face of hard wooden batons from each other, and hard stares from passers-by when they walk up the road afterwards with bells still ringing from their ankles. Today they also deserved applause.
The foul weather didn’t stop the smiles from Oxford Morris Men (who curiously also include a woman!). 3Songs also caught music from Reel Bach Consort playing music from Bach who was a visitor to Germany in days past that were hopefully sunnier than today. Good also to see the familiar face of Tom Kannamacher amongst the youngsters.
