Folk Club in June – the success story continues!

Sax Attack ready for action

Detlef Stachetzki was in Grauerheindorf to capture the latest Folk-Club evening – here is my translation of his review:

Even good weather, a long weekend thanks to Ascension Day, and a qualifying match for the World Championship didn’t deter music fans from attending the Graurheindorfer Folk Club. Maybe because the chances of relaxing at the Folk Club are much greater than the chances of managing to do it watching an International Football Game? Whatever the reason, it was good to see all the familiar smiling faces once again.

New faces were present too.  In particular those from ‘The General-Anzeiger’ which had sent a reporter and photographer to find out what all the fuss was about at our gatherings.  The result was an excellent report published on the following Monday.  Their estimate of the audience number at 140 was a little ‘über’enthusiastic though.  Such a large turnout would have practically burst the walls – or at the very least stretched the catering staff to breaking point.  We’ve certainly had around 100 people here on a Winters’ evening though, and the 70 or so that were actually there on Friday, made for a pleasant, relaxed atmosphere – as well as allowing our Guardian Angel and Bar Manageress Angelika Bürfent to keep everyone fed and ‘watered’.

Rory Gallagher–Notes From San Francisco (Sony)

It was the early 70’s and my friend Louis had just bought the new CD from a man named Gallagher.  That was all I knew.  Not much of an expert in those days, I innocently asked “Is that the guy who plays with Lyle”?

I soon discovered that this Gallagher had another partner.  The partners name was God and his only involvement was giving Rory a talent for playing guitar like no other has, before or since.

This particular disc, just released through Sony via Rory’s brother Donal, caught my attention particularly because it was originally dumped by Rory Gallagher in a hotel wastebasket the day  Donal was due to present it to Chrysalis Record Executives.

Music to stop Nuclear Power by

Brings onstage in Bonn

Popular Cologne band ‘Brings’ were the special guests to round off an anti-Nuclear Power Demo in Bonn on Saturday.

The Demo was one of around twenty taking place in major German Cities, and organizers claimed a turnout in Bonn alone of around 7500 demonstrators.

‘Brings’ are the the most famous of what are known here as ‘Kölschrock’ bands – musicians performing Rock music in the local Cologne dialect which is known as Kölsch.
This is also the local beers name – which is apt, as Brings also endorse the local brewer ‘Gaffel’. Check out THIS VIDEO for a ‘taster’

Hugh Laurie-Let Them Talk (WB 2564674078)

Hugh Laurie Let Them TalkAs Hugh Laurie recalls to Mojo Magazine “This album got a spanking, and we hadn’t even made it”  A top earning Actor likes Blues, so he heads for Hollywood,  does some extra recording in New Orleans, all with a top class band, and makes a record.  Presumably Warner Brothers weren’t worried, as long as the finished product included a sticker saying ‘Star of the Award Winning TV Series ‘Dr House’  So, everyone a winner then?  Well maybe not everyone – how about Joe and Josephine public?

New – ‘Gig Guide’ Tab

New Gig Guide

Just added to the site is a new GIG GUIDE tab.  It really is a guide only, so don’t assume if it’s not there it’s not happening.  This is a calendar for shows that I think will be of interest to viewers. If you’re reading this, that means you! – So if you are in a band with dates in Bonn/Cologne or know of a show  not listed that might be of interest, please let me know via  the comments box under the calendar and I will add it if it’s up our musical street.

Thanks in advance – I hope you find the tab useful.
