Marley’s Ghost seen in Bad Godesberg

Another open-air season got underway here in Bonn this week. Unter der Zeder 2024 on Monday evening saw a lively band and an equally lively audience in front of the Kleines Theater in Bad Godesberg’s Kurpark. Marley’s Ghost brought the musical spirit of Mr Bob Marley to the Kurpark for the third year running and it wasn’t hard to see why. The six-piece combo’s enthusiasm is hugely contagious. They seem to take it almost as a failure on their own behalves if not everyone in the audience is up and dancing. Maybe the UDZ presenters should consider removing all seats next year (and I’m sure on this year’s performance there will be a NEXT year again for the band).

Harmony in a time of dis-harmony with Olivia Trummer in Dottendorf

The Bürgerverein Dottendorf/Gronau grew out of an idea in 2011 of Burghard Mandt and Herbert Kaupert. The aim being development of the Ortszentrum Dottendorf as a local cultural venue and a centre point for local residents. I think it’s fair to say that, as far as the former goes, it has exceeded even Burghard and Max’s expectations. A look at this years calendar will reveal that some of the most vibrant present and rising stars in the jazz world are lining up to get in the door at Dottendorferstrasse 51.

Tonight it’s the turn of singer/pianist Olivia Trummer. Past concerts by Trummer include appearances at the Montréal Jazz Festival, Vancouver Jazz Festival and Ronnie Scott’s in London. Tonight… Dottendorf!

Kunstrasen 2024 Opens With The National

The new Kunstrasen season got underway last Thursday with a visit from US band The National in perfect weather.  Perhaps sunshine and smiles don’t quite fit the melancholy mood of singer Matt Berninger’s generally sombre texts, but given the heat, it was probably best that we didn’t have a lively dance band in front of us.  Even so, there was a break for medical attention midway through the band’s set.  Join me if you will, down by the Rhine with a plastic cup of Veltins in one hand and a pretzel in the other as The National take the stage to the strains of Talking Heads ‘Slippery People’

Altstadt Bonn – The Sound of Music

It seems as if street musicians in Bonn are like buses. Nothing in sight – and then they all come at once. Saturday saw 30 local acts in five locations to enjoy between 2 pm and 8 pm under the heading ‘Sound der Altstadt’. It was clear that when Markus Schnurpfeil and Fanny Delaune put together this year’s event for the Altstadt Initiative Bonn there was no shortage of musical talent in the City.

Folk Club June with David Blair

This month’s guest at Folk Club Bonn, David Blair, is a thug. No need to call the police though. David is a self-confessed ‘Hug Thug’ which he explains thus: “A hug thug is just a fun term for someone who enjoys hugging and often initiates hugging and respectfully connecting with people through a hug. Anyone who likes hugging is a friend of mine! I love hugging because it’s a fun way to say hello and welcome and goodbye with a lot of love for my fellow man!” Join me then at Dotty’s in Dottendorf for an evening of music, song and… hugs.
