Blind Feat – Jazz meets Rock in Kurpark

The band’s website asks a very simple question: “What happens when you mix a drummer and bass player with metal/heavy rock background, a saxophone/flute player who studied jazz in Kiev, a guitarist/lead vocalist who started with punk rock and later learned to love the blues/jazz, and a percussionist/drummer who hates blues with a passion?” The answer is Blind Feat. How would their mix of self-penned rock, ballads and Jazz arrangements come across to a Kurpark audience more used to hearing familiar rock, blues and jazz standards?

Up until now anyway, there has only ever been one musical superstar from Bonn. Outside of Ludwig von B though there have been a few stars of a more local folk-pop variety, and two of them were shining at Konrad Beircher’s home, Katharinenhof, this week. Cynthia Nickschas re-located away from here not so long ago whilst Götz Widmann headed for Berlin in 2008. Both have their musical roots here though, and it was a pleasure to hear them, both individually and collectively, in what really is a unique setting.

Listening to ‘Smoke on the Water’, ‘Whatever You Want’ or ‘Schools Out’ live would have cost you a good few Euros at Kunstrasen in recent years. Okay, there was no Deep Purple, Quo or Alice Cooper at Kurpark this week, but you would have got all the hits without any misses all well played and sung. Thank you Cologne/Bad Hennef Rock coverband The Bad Keys!

It’s that time of year once again. Both the sun and musicians are making appearances in Bonn’s great outdoors again. Rain? Will it? won’t it? This evening it was the organizers for ‘Burger Bad Godesberg Events’ who had to watch the skies all evening. On the steps of the Trinkpavillion in Bad Godesberg Kurpark there were a couple of dozen musicians trying not to look up every minute and just concentrating on playing Big Band Jazz.
Götz Widmann + Cynthia Nickschas in Bad Godesberg

It’s still hard to get used to not seeing Cynthia Nickschas regularly at local music events in Bonn. She’s no longer based in Bonn, so her many fans here will be glad to hear that she is due in Bad Godesberg again on 6 June supporting German singer/songwriter Götz Widmann on his 30th Anniversary Tour at Konrad Beikircher’s Katherinenhof in Schweinheim.

Julian Sas added to Lynyrd Skynyrd bill at Kunstrasen

Good news for the many Julian Sas fans here in Bonn is that the genial Dutchman has been announced as support for Lynyrd Skynyrd‘s Kunstrasen appearance on 5 July. Seeing as Simon McBride, who last appeared on the Kunstrasen stage standing in for Deep Purple’s Steve Morse is also supporting, this looks like being an excellent evening for Bluesrock guitar fans. My advice is to get there early so as not to miss anyone!
PLAYING ORDER:
6 pm – Julian Sas
7.10 pm – Simon McBride
8.25 pm – Lynyrd Skynyrd

RIP Rick Derringer

Sad to hear today that Rick Derringer has passed away. In six decades in Rock music Derringer was not just a top guitaristist but also well known as a songwriter and producer. He also had fame as a pop singer with The McCoys and the single “Hang On Sloopy”. As well as Johnny Winter (see the picture above from Bonn Museumsplatz in 2007) Derringer also worked with many other top musical performers across a broad range of music including Steely Dan, Alice Cooper, Kiss, Cyndi Lauper, and Barbra Streisand and, more recently, with Ringo Starr.
